Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. At a distance of 11 km from the town it is the highest point with an elevation of approx 7,500 ft. / 2,500 mtr. Tiger Hill is among the two viewpoints in India which offers a panoramic view Eastern Himalaya including Mt. Kanchendzonga, world’s third highest peak & Mt. Everest, world’s highest peak. Kabru, Pandim, Makalu, Kumbhakarna are some of the other important peaks. The local people call it  ‘Sleeping Buddha’ as is looks like the god, laying on the Himalayas.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI)

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in a premium mountaineering institute in the world & an important sightseeing point. Tenzing Norgay & Sir Edmund Hillary scaled Mt. Everest on 29th May 1953. In 1954 the institute was established to honour the great mountaineers. Tenzing Norgey was the first field director of the institute. HMI has a museum with various mountaineering artefacts including the first Everest Expedition. It also has boarding facilities for mountaineering students & trainers, along with a restaurant & souvenir shop for the tourist. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (Darjeeling Zoo)

Adjacent to Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) there is Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, one of the best high altitude zoos in the world. It is spread across 67.6 acres at an average elevation of 7000 ft. The zoo was inaugurated in 1958 & was dedicated to Padmaja Naidu who was the daughter of Sarojini Naidu & Ex governor on West Bengal. The zoo is a captive breeding centre for Snow Leopard, Red Panda & Himalayan Wolf.  There are other important animals are Salamander, Siberian Tiger, Yak ect. The zoo is also reach with fauna. It has over 200 species of plants & trees, shrubs & medicinal plants. There are over 50 varieties of orchids & high altitude trees like Oak, Brich, Maple ect.

 

Batasia Loop

Just below Ghoom, Batasia Loop is an important tourist spot of Darjeeling.  It is a spiral narrow gauge railway track with a tunnel. Batasia Loop is often covered in the morning along with Tiger Hill & Ghoom Monastery. There is a garden & a war memorial to memorise the martyrs. Batasia Loop is also a view point of Mt. Kanchendzonga, surrounding peaks & the town.

Ghoom Monastery

Yiga Choeling Monastery, located near Ghoom is popularly known as Ghoom Mpnastery (old). This is the oldest monastery in Darjeeling district & an important sightseeing point. The Mangolian astrologer Sokpo Sherab Gyatso built the monastery in 1850. He was the heads of the monastery till 1905.  There is a 15 feet high statue of Maitreya Buddha (future Buddha). There is another monastery i.e. Samten Choeling Monastery also referred as Ghoom Monastery (new), located just beside the main road in Ghoom.

 

Japanese Temple & Peace Pagoda

Just 2.5 km away from Darjeeling Town in Jalapahara there is a Temple built in Japanese style. It is a two storied building with a large prayer hall. The temple belongs to ‘Nipponzan Myohoji’ Buddhist order. It was established in 1972 by Nichidatsu Fujii, who also the founder of Nipponzan Myohoji order. The temple is open through the day. But if you reach on time you can join the prayer early morning at 4.30 in the morning & 4.30 in the afternoon.

Just a few meters away from Japanese Temple there is a Peace Pagoda. These two are among the most important tourist attraction in Darjeeling. The foundation stone of the pagoda was laid in 1972 but was inaugurated in 1992. It is a white coloured Buddhist stupa with four Statue of Lord Buddha replicating four different forms or avatars. One can walk around the stupa to see tales of Lord Buddha’s life craved on the wall of pagoda. The white colour indicates the equality, non-violence & world peace.

Happy Valley Tea Estate

Happy Valley Tea Estate, the second oldest tea garden, was established in 1854. As Darjeeling produces the highest quality tea in the world, it is one of the major tourist attractions here. It is situated just 3 km from the town. The garden has an area of over 440 acres in a stiff slop of Eastern Himalaya at an elevation of approx 7,000 ft (2100 meters). Tourists can enjoy a visit to tea garden & the factory along with tea processing & testing. The garden authority offers a guided tour with briefing about tea leaf, processing & various tea products.

Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway

Darjeeling ropeway is also known as Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway. It starts from North Point (Singmari) in the town & runs up to Singla on the banks of Ramam River. The cable car has sixteen cars each has a capacity to carry up to six people.  The 45 minutes ride offers a breathtaking view of undulating hills with lush green tea gardens. at the end of your Darjeeling sightseeing it the best way to relax yourself & enjoy the scenic beauty.

Rock Garden & Gangamaya Park

About 10 km drive through tea gardens will take you to Rock Garden. It is a garden on the slop of mountain with a waterfall. The entire garden was created by rocks. Small bridges in the garden add additional flavor to it. Just 3 km drive from Rock Garden will take you to Gangamaya Park. The park is in a valley surrounded by mountains & a mountain stream flows through it. It is a beautiful park & often cultural shows are organised in it.

 

Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre

Tibetan Self Help Refugee Centre was established in 1959. It was rehabilitation centre for the Tibetan people who fled their mother land with Dalai Lama. You can reach the centre at Lobogng cart Road by walking 15 minutes from Chowrasta. The centre produces woolen crafts , carpet, wooden crafts & may other traditional items. There is a craft shop where visitors can buy the handicrafts. The visitor also can visit the workshop & the manufacturing process.

 

Darjeeling Mal (Chowrasta)

Darjeeling Mal or Chowrasta is at the top. There are shops, hotels & restaurants around the area. This is a flat ground where the visitors can roam around & relax in the evening. A horse ride in Chowrasta can be an added attraction. One can also walk around Mal and have picturesque view of Mt. Kanchendzonga. The curio shop around Mal sell many traditional handicrafts with cultural & religious values.

Darjeeling Best time to visit 

You can plan your travel to Darjeeling Himalaya at any time of the year. Every season will offer you a different flavor. It mainly has five seasons.

Spring (March to April)

It is a very good season with moderate temperature. This is the time for rhododendrons, orchids & various flowers. Snow will also be visible in some parts of the district.

Summer (May to Jun)

As summer is not very hot. It draws the maximum no of tourist. Most of the regions of the region experience a temperature clime & it ranges from 150C (600F) to 280C (820F).

Monsoon (Jul to Mid Sep)

This is the time when the region gets maximum rainfall. Darjeeling is an ideal place to enjoy Indian monsoon with lush green tea gardens, hills along with beautiful clouds & fog. But heavy rain increases the risk of landslide during monsoon.

Autumn (Mid Sep to Nov)

Just after monsoon this is probably the best time to visit Darjeeling with clear sky & moderate temperature.  It is also a good time for photography.

By Air

The nearest operational airport in Bagdogra (IXB). Bagdogra airport is approx 75 km away from the city, Bagdogra is directly connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Paro & Bangkok. It is indirect connection all major cities in India.

The nearest railway station is New Jalpauguri (NJP) located near Siliguri. NJP has good connectivity with all major cities in India. NJP is approx 72 km from the city.

By Road

National Highway 110 & 10 connects it with Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP through national . North Bengal State transport Corporation (NBSTC) operates regular busses from Siliguri to various destinations like  Kalimpong, Mirik, Lava ect. Private buses are also available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus.
