Why Nathula Pass is Famous

Nathula Pass is not just a picturesque mountain pass; it holds immense historical and strategic significance. It was part of the old Silk Route, a network of trade routes that linked India with China and the rest of Central Asia. This route flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries when merchants traveled with caravans of silk, tea, wool, and other valuable goods. Nathula served as a key point for the exchange of goods between India and Tibet.

In 1962, the Indo-China war caused the pass to close for civilian use. It reopened in 2006 after more than four decades, though primarily for trade purposes. Today, the pass stands as a reminder of the region’s history and serves as an important diplomatic and trade route between India and China.
