Itinerary – Gangtok Pelling Tour

Day 01 : Siliguri/Bagdogra to Gangtok (Distance 135 km. / approx 4.30 hrs)

Welcome to Gangtok Pelling Tour . On arrival at Siliguri (NJP) railway station or Bagdogra (IXB) airport meet & greet by Navigator India’s representative. Drive to Gangtok. On the way you you will visit Corotation Bridge & magnificent view of the river Tista.

Day 02 : Gangtok sightseeing

Proceed on a city tour in Gangtok including Tashi view point, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok; 3 view points offering panoramic view of snow capped Himalayan peaks & Gangtok city. Proceed to visit Rumtek Monastery/ Jhakri Falls (any one), Institute of Tibetology to have a glance of Tibetan Thanka and antics, Orchid House (having numerous collection of orchids), Enchay Monastery ,Dodurl Chorten etc.

Day 03 : Excursion – Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir

Early in the morning (7.30 am) drive for an excursion to Tsomgo Lake, situated 32 km away from the city at an altitude of above 12,000 ft. & Baba Mandir another 01 hour drive. Enjoy yak ride around the lake (own cost). Drive back to hotel for lunch. Enjoy your evening at MG Marg in Gangtok.

Note: Foreigner are not allowed to go to Baba Mandir. They can go up to Tsomgo Lake only accompanied by a local guide (compulsory). Guide charges to be paid extra.

Day 04 : Gangtok to Pelling via Ravangla (Distance 118 km./ 5 hrs)

Today you will transferred to Pelling via Ravangla, a small township & of South Sikkim. As the road condition is not very good, it will take approx 5hrs to reach Pelling Check into your hotel in Pelling. Afternoon free for refreshment.

Note: You can go from Gangtok to Pelling via Namchi (148 km/ 6hrs) & visit Siddheswar Dham (Char Dham) at Namchi on an extra cost.

Day 05 : Pelling sightseeing

Today you will proceed to full day Pelling sightseeing including Rimbi False, Rimbi Rock Garden, Kanchandzonga False, Khecheopalri Lake, Pemayangtse monastery etc.

Day 06: Pelling to Siliguri/ Bagdogra ( Distance 145 km. / approx 7 hrs)

Today is your farewell day for your Gangtok Pelling Tour . Drive back to Siliguri (NJP)/ Bagdogra (IXB) for your onward journey with happy memories to cherish.

  • Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit Tsomgo Lake. They can can obtain the same in Gangtok. All the guests must carry 2 copies passport size recent colour photographs, Passport & copy of Restricted Area Permit (RAP).

Tsomgo Lake – Gangtok

Changu Lake is approx 40 Km away from Gangtok on the way to Nathula Pass. In Bhutaia Lacguage the word Tsomgo means the ‘Source on Lakes’. At an altitude of approx 12,000 ft above the sea level it is the most important place to visit in Sikkim. the  Lake is oval in shape and approximately 1km long. It has an average depth of about 50 ft.  Snow melted water from the mountains around created the lake & the lake created a river namely Lungtze Chu. The lake further falls into Rangpo-chu.

According to the myth the spirituals gurus of Sikkim used to study the colour of the water of Tsomgo Lake to forecast the future of the state. So the local people considered the lake as sacred.

Changu Lake is a paradise for the ornithologists. The migratory birds takes a break near the lake while flying long way from Syberia to the Indian plains. Brahminy Ducks  is a one of the spices.

Tsomgo Lake permit

Rumtek Monastery (Dharma Chakra Centre)

Rumten Monastery is 24km away from the city. After Tsomgo Lake it is the most important tourist spot. It also works as the Buddhist head quarter of India. The monastery was constructed in the year 1960 by the Gyalwa Karmapa, who was the 16th Karmapa & settled in Sikkim in late fifties. Rumtek is the largest monastery of Sikkim. Namgyal (Research) Institute of Tibetology

About one kilometer away from the Gangtok main market there is Namgyal Institute of Tibetology surrounded by magnolia, oak & brich trees. The institute building is a perfect example of Tibetan style of architecture & a major sightseeing point. It is one of the renowned institutes of the world with rare collection of books, documents & manuscripts on Buddhism. There is a huge volume of xylographs (printed wooden documents), translation of original teachings of the Lord Buddha & Buddhist scholars around the world. The institute also conducts research on Buddhism along with Tibetan culture & language. The adjoin museum has a rare collection of antiques like Thankas, coins & Buddhist sculpture. The foundation stone of the institute was laid by Dalai Lama in 1957 & was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1958.

 

Places to Visit in Pelling

Kecheopalri Lake

Situated in the north-west of Pelling, Kecheopalri Lake is a sacred pilgrimage site in Pelling sightseeing for both Hindus and Buddhists. Believed to be a wish-fulfilling lake, this place is heaven for nature lovers and travellers. Many interesting legends revolve around the origin and history of the lake. The shape of the lake looks like a footprint if viewed from the top. Hindus consider this as the footprint of god Shiva while Buddhists believe it to be the footprint of goddess Tara. Another interesting fact about this lake is that in spite of being situated amidst so mush of greenery, no fallen leaves can be seen floating on its surface. It is said that the birds keep the lake clean all the time. Emerging as a popular tourist attraction in Sikkim, Kecheopalri Lake is visited by pilgrims from all around the world.

 

Kanchendzonga Waterfalls

24 km from the beautiful township of Sikkim, Kanchendzonga waterfall is one of the major tourist hotspot in west Sikkim. It is a perennial waterfall and remains active throughout the whole year. Noted for its fascinating view of surrounding hills and countryside, this stunning waterfall is doubtlessly one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the entire Sikkim. Here, one can also find many small food-stalls selling snacks and tea, which make this place an ideal picnic spot to spend some quality time with near and dear ones.

Pemayangtse Monastery

Pemayangtse monastery is a popular Buddhist monastery. It is situated at a distance of 2 km from Pelling. Built in 1705 by Lama Lhatsum Chempo, it is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. The word Pemayangtse means ‘sublime lotus’ and it is considered to represent one of the four plexus of human body. With its beautiful collection of Buddhist idols, scriptures, sculptures, carvings and paintings, this three storied building is a heavenly place surrounded by magnificent Himalayan ranges of snow-capped mountains. Outside the monastery, there is also a very beautiful picturesque garden well maintained by the monks. Undoubtedly this monastery is one of the must see places when one is in Pelling.
