Itinerary- Darjeeling Gangtok Tour Plan

Day 01 : Siliguri/Bagdogra to Darjeeling  (83 Km./ 3 hrs)

Welcome to Darjeeling Gangtok Tour . On arrival at Siliguri (NJP) railway station or Bagdogra (IXB) airport meet & greet by Navigator India’s representative. Transfer from Siliguri/Bagdogra to Darjeeling through lush green tea gardens & undulating hills. Check into hotel & rest of the day is t leisure.

Day 02 : Darjeeling sightseeing

Early in the morning (around 4 am), proceed to Tiger Hill to view the breath taking view of Mt.Kanchandzonga (28,200 ft.) & effect of sunlight on the same along with the adjoining peaks like Kabru & Pandim. On the way back visit Ghoom Monastery & Batasia Loop. After breakfast proceed for a half day  excursion to Himalayan Mountaineering (HMI) & Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (Thursday closed), Peace Pagoda, Japanese Temple, Tea garden (outer view), Tenzing Rock, Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center (Sunday closed) etc.

Day 03 : Darjeeling to Gangtok (120 Km./ 4.30 hrs)

Today you will be transferred to Gangtok from Darjeeling, a picturesque drive through Himalayan hills. On the way visit Peshok view point  the confluence of river Teesta & Rangeet.

Day 04 : Excursion – Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir

Early in the morning (7.30 am) drive for an excursion to Tsomgo Lake, situated 32 km away from the city at an altitude of above 12,000 ft. & Baba Mandir another 01 hour drive. Enjoy yak ride around the lake (own cost).  Drive back to hotel for lunch. Enjoy your evening at MG Marg in Gangtok.

Note: Foreigner are not allowed to go to Baba Mandir. They can go up to Tsomgo Lake only accompanied by a local guide (compulsory). Guide charges to be paid extra.

Day 05 : Gangtok sightseeing

Proceed for a Gangtok sightseeing including Tashi view point, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok; 3 view points offering panoramic view of snow capped Himalayan peaks & Gangtok city. Proceed to visit Rumtek Monastery/ Jhakri Falls (any one), Institute  of Tibetology to have a glance of Tibetan Thanka and antics, Orchid House (having numerous collection of orchids), Enchay Monastery, Dodurl Chorten etc.

Day 06 : Gangtok to Bagdogra/ Siliguri/ NJP  (135 km. / 4.30 hrs.)

Nathula Pass (optional)

It is just 56 km away (3 hrs drive) from Gangtok. The road passes through Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) another major tourist attraction in Sikkim. Rumten Monastery

Rumten Monastery is 24km away from the city. After Tsomgo Lake it is the most important tourist spot. It also works as the Buddhist head quarter of India. The monastery was constructed in the year 1960 by the Gyalwa Karmapa, who was the 16th Karmapa & settled in Sikkim in late fifties. Rumtek is the largest monastery of Sikkim. Just beside the monastery there is Nalanda Institute of Buddhist Studies with huge collection Buddhist.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

About one kilometer away from the Gangtok main market there is Namgyal Institute of Tibetology surrounded by magnolia, oak & brich trees. The institute building is a perfect example of Tibetan style of architecture & a major sightseeing point. It is one of the renowned institutes of the world with rare collection of books, documents & manuscripts on Buddhism. There is a huge volume of xylographs (printed wooden documents), translation of original teachings of the Lord Buddha & Buddhist scholars around the world. The institute also conducts research on Buddhism along with Tibetan culture & language. The adjoin museum has a rare collection of antiques like Thankas, coins & Buddhist sculpture. The foundation stone of the institute was laid by Dalai Lama in 1957 & was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1958.

Tashi View Point

This is a view point in Gangtok, approx 8 km from the main market. The tourist spot with a view point, offers a panoramic view of the Himalaya including Mt. Kanchendzonga & Mt. Siniolchu.

Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. Plan your Gangtok Darjeeling tour package in November to witness the best vies of Mt.Kanchendzonga from Tiger Hill. At a distance of 11 km from the town it is the highest point with an elevation of approx 7,500 ft. / 2,500 mtr. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI)

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in a premium mountaineering institute in the world & an important sightseeing point. Tenzing Norgay & Sir Edmund Hillary scaled Mt. Everest on 29th May 1953. In 1954 the institute was established to honour the great mountaineers. Tenzing Norgey was the first field director of the institute. HMI has a museum with various mountaineering artefacts including the first Everest Expedition. It also has boarding facilities for mountaineering students & trainers, along with a restaurant & souvenir shop for the tourist. HMI is one of the renowned mountaineering institutes of the world & a prime attraction for the adventure lovers.

Batasia Loop

Just below Ghoom, Batasia Loop is an important tourist spot of Darjeeling.  It is a spiral narrow gauge railway track with a tunnel. Batasia Loop is often covered in the morning along with Tiger Hill & Ghoom Monastery. There is a garden & a war memorial to memorise the martyrs. Batasia Loop is also a view point of Mt. Kanchendzonga, surrounding peaks & the town.

Japanese Temple & Peace Pagoda Darjeeling 

Just 2.5 km away from Darjeeling Town in Jalapahara there is a Temple built in Japanese style. It is a two storied building with a large prayer hall. The temple belongs to ‘Nipponzan Myohoji’ Buddhist order. It was established in 1972 by Nichidatsu Fujii, who also the founder of Nipponzan Myohoji order. The temple is open through the day. But if you reach on time you can join the prayer early morning at 4.30 in the morning & 4.30 in the afternoon.

Just a few meters away from Japanese Temple there is a Peace Pagoda. These two are among the most important tourist attraction in Darjeeling. The foundation stone of the pagoda was laid in 1972 but was inaugurated in 1992. It is a white coloured Buddhist stupa with four Statue of Lord Buddha replicating four different forms or avatars. One can walk around the stupa to see tales of Lord Buddha’s life craved on the wall of pagoda. The white colour indicates the equality, non-violence & world peace.

Best time to visit Darjeeling Gangtok

Autumn (Mid Sep to Nov)

Just after monsoon this is probably the best time to travel with clear sky & moderate temperature.  It is also a good time for photography. By Air

Bagdogra directly connects Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bangaluru, Chennai, Paro & Bangkok. It has indirect connections with all major cities in India. Sikkim Airport: Pakyong Airport (PUG) is the only airport in Sikkim. It is approx 30 km away from Gangtok. It connects Kolkata & Guwahati.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) located near Siliguri. NJP connects with all major cities in India. Sikkim does not have any railway connectivity. NJP is the only option to access any destination in Darjeeling & Sikkim.

By Road

Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP is connected through national National Highway 55 & 10. North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) operates regular buses from Siliguri to various destinations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Lava etc. Sikkim national Transport (SNT) operates regular basses to places in Sikkim. There are no of private buses & cars available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus.
